Rachel G Batmitzvah

Months ago, Wendy reached out to me asking if I could photograph her kid’s Batmitzvah before and after (apparently you cannot photograph the actual ceremony). I thought, sure, why not! I had no idea what a Batmitzvah was and thought I’d just go with the flow. I was in for quite a surprise!

Though I didn’t get to see or experience the ceremony, I did get an onslaught of pop-teen culture and a hint of the life of a modern-day teenage girl. It was very interesting to hear conversations about code names for boy crushes, teens referring to themselves as grown adults while drinking bottled soda pop, and one boy dreaming of becoming the next Ellen DeGeneres while figuring out the finances to give away iPads to an entire audience. Instead of worrying about mortgages and upcoming tax season, their main concern was where the chickens were in Minecraft and who gets next on Mariokart. And can someone please teach me all the moves to the whip-nay-nay, particularly the “stanky leg?”

A new age is upon us and the integration of technology and youths is strong. Here’s to the next generation—mazel tov!

ALASKA, THE FINAL FRONTIER

This whole time I thought it was space, but according to the state of Alaska, it is the final frontier. Huh. Does that mean I’m done traveling? AM I AT THE END!? I sure hope not, I’m just getting warmed up! Literally, I’m thawing from Alaska.

Before this trip, most of the places I had been to were major cities or tropical areas. Alaska was different in so many ways—in so many good, fantastic, awesome ways. There wasn’t much snow, I didn’t see any polar bears, but I did see a Yeti. Either that or it was a very pale old man.

From what I saw, most of Alaska remains untamed and wild, but more importantly, respected. There is an abundance of wildlife, protected forests, and completely uninhabited territories with the exception of a few care takers who live without running water. Alaska unexpectedly brought me back to nature in a way I did not expect. Though jokingly for old folks, Alaska is filled with rugged terrain and excursions fit for everyone to enjoy.

Check out some snaps from my latest trek to the 49th state starring: Jenny!

Luckily no bandits boarded our train. This old school railroad took us from Anchorage to Seward, a 4.5 hour ride through the Alaskan wilderness.

To the naked eye, the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) can look like a mere cloud of mist moving about the sky. Very fortunate to have captured this on a moving vessel.  ISO 1600 / 24MM / F2.8 / 4 sec

According to the guides, Orcas appear about 5-10% of the time. With the lack of rain, addition of sunshine, and a pod of Orcas, it was a lucky day.

To get your endorphins going for this next set (shot with iPhone), imagine yourself exiting a canoe after a brief trip through fog and mist. You are now standing among scattered, ocean polished rocks and you can hear the rushing water that feeds the river you just traversed. As you walk along, you look up, you can see trees for miles. You can smell the greens. Entire snow-capped mountains covered with them. The crisp 50ºF air fills your lungs with a chill, but it is refreshing.

Mist beads up on your face as you step through knee deep puddles of 20º water, but thankfully you have your rain boots on. As you step closer to the frozen palace, its scale becomes more and more apparent, until suddenly you are subject to its majesty.

An entire mountainside of ice towering over you as it spews water from an opening at the foot. Standing 100 yards away is time itself, frozen into magnificent hues of blue and white. You look down and realize you’re standing on the glacier itself; frozen solid and covered with soil.

Learning about the art of glass blowing—not a native thing to AK, but an experience that made our trip special none the less.

Ginny + Michael Wedding

“Just breathe, this is your big day! Are you okay? Are you nervous? You can do this!”

Those were the words spoken to me by the bride as I prepared to shoot my first formal wedding as the primary photographer.

You might remember this power couple from their unforgettable Disneyland engagement shoot a few months ago. On 4/8/16 (see what they did with the numbers there?) their fate would be sealed in forever. It’s been nothing short of amazing getting to know these two people. They met at work (the same place that I worked) so I have had a front-row seat to their love story since day one. Some days it was like being in a soap opera–WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT!? Other days it was confusing as to how they could stand to stay in the same room with eachother. However, most days, it made perfect sense that they were made for eachother. See for yourself ala the images below! P.S. Donuts instead of cake—could this be more perfect!?

Personal notes:
Michael and I were like Maverick and Goose at work, except neither of us died. We were both on top of our games and when we weren’t, we inspired eachother to do better. Sometimes it was competitive, other times it was collaborative, but the respect for eachother was always mutual and at the end of the day, all we wanted was what everyone wants: to be happy. In my farewell card, Michael wrote, “Though we come from different places, we are connected through art!” I can say that quote, original or not, is now stapled to Michael’s file in my brain. It’s amazing how that quote sums up our friendship. Together we’ve faced many tough projects, days, months—but at least we had eachother to lean on.

Ginny Ber. You know what makes a good friend? When it’s weird when you call them by their real name. Not just like a little weird, but like, uttering their real name to their face is just like saying the f word to a baby. It’s just not right. The same time Ginny did the yooper waltz into Michael’s life, she did mine. I guess Asian people are like a rare fruit where she lives so when we became friends she showed me off to all her friends like she found big foot. I gained overnight celebrity status in the Upper Peninsula and people knew who I was far before I knew any of them. I’m pretty sure that if you had a mic on Ginny and I’s conversations, we’d be classified as mentally insane. Weird noises, our own language, references to THE WEIRDEST THINGS ON THE INTERNET (wait, wait, wait, wait, wait). Yep. Oh, and we can pick up exactly where we left off even if we haven’t seen eachother for months. I’d say that’s what makes a forever friend. Well at least until we get into a tiff and then we’re not friends anymore. Then that wouldn’t be forever would it? Guess not. Whatevz.

I’m super happy for you guys, and I am so glad you both fell into my life as you’ve fallen into eachother’s. Wishing you both nothing but love, success, and above all that one thing we all search for: happiness. So… Chinese soon? LOVE YOU GUYS.
